UV-Vis is an analytical technique that measures the absorbance of visible or ultraviolet light at a single wavelength or over a spectral range. By measuring the absorbance of a compound in solution, and calculating the molar extinction coefficient of the compound from a standard, the concentration of that material can be quantified. For example, Sun Protection Factor (SPF) can be determined by assaying the known active ingredient or calculation of the overall UV protection a product provides. In some identification tests, a compound can be recognized based on the wavelength that absorbs the most light.
How UV-Vis works
A Deuterium-Tungsten lamp provides light that is passed through a diffraction grating allowing for single wavelengths to pass through the sample to a photodiode array detector. The absorbance at a specific wavelength or a range of wavelengths is measured. The light is passed simultaneously through the sample and a reference solvent and the ratio of the two beams is displayed as the measurement. The absorbance of a solution is proportional to the concentration of the absorbing species allowing for quantification of the analyte of interest.
Capabilities
Dynalene utilizes a Shimadzu UV-1900 Spectrophotometer to perform UV-Vis analysis on materials including consumer care products, pigments, coatings, organic conjugates (proteins, DNA, RNA) and metallic ions. This technique is a cost effective way of performing assays and characterizing your product.
